Description

Background

Marek Sikorin has been a soldier all his life. He demonstrated a strong aptitude for military matters from an early age and by his early twenties, was already an experienced commander. He is the younger brother of Rasa Sikorin, who is presumed dead after she vanished in 629, which hit Marek hard. He never had aspirations to rule, and demurred when the assembled Sikorins offered him rule of the house, which ultimately went to his younger sister's son, Sigitas. However, the office of Voivode of the Expanse was also left vacant, and, at the urging of Zaria Albalaski, the king of the Commonwealth, Victor Vanzek, named Marek voivode.

The arrangement is a little peculiar, since with House Sikorin being as militaristic as it is, the voivode holds a great deal of sway. Still, Marek has scant interest in civil administration, such as it is in the Expanse.

Marek finds himself in Sanctuary sometimes. He attempts to reciprocate the frequent visits by members of House Lindner by going south in turn. He is sympathetic to some of the problems potentially faced in the south, even if no obvious solution might present itself.

Personality

Stern and sensible.

Actually, Marek has his moments of being at least a little less stern, though they're rare. He is, however, always sensible. He doesn't particularly begrudge others frivolity or foolishness, but nor is he known to partake.

As a general, he is calculating and prudent. A glorious charge upon the first sighting of the enemy might work once, twice, thrice even, but then by the time his forces encounter the enemy a fourth time, he might have run out of soldiers. He is a strong advocate for the long-time Lonin doctrine of observing the enemy for as long as it takes to build up overwhelming force to then attack with. He is a man able to learn from mistakes and to absorb new ideas. When at Sanctuary, some of his favourite people to engage with are other commanders. More often than not, Marek has more to teach than to learn. He's sometimes a curiosity among courtiers interested in what to some is the semi-mythical region of the Expanse, and he endures their questioning with his usual stern manner and as much politeness as he can muster.
