Arrival
Urumil arrives.
Ada
(Ada) Commonwealth scouts have been shadowing the force of raiders for some days. The initial estimates garnered from the first company to discover it place it at two thousand strong, at the low end, with accompanying beasts. Those numbers are not entirely unknown in the Expanse, but are far from a common feature. The raider force angled far to the southeast, before turning southward. It is still days out from the properly inhabited regions of Lonin, almost directly north of where the Prosna meets the Whitewater.
The soldiers of the Commonwealth are used to complications with their work, but this time has been unusually fraught. A number -- they cannot tell how many -- of the great feline beasts, one of which were encountered previously, stalk the tundra, paired with raider handlers. The creatures can outrun a horse. The options are to find a way through, or go into the fight blind.
Bogdan
(Bogdan) Castellan Bogdan Albalaski can feel the cold in his bones. He feels it more acutely now, at this age, with less meat on his frame, with the rigors and pains of age. But the cold numbs him, in its way, even under his large parka and heavy pants and heavy riding boots, the governor sitting atop his trusty steed, surrounded by some of Lonin's finest horse riders.
His eyes flick this way and that, considering the force that they are here to intercept, and to potentially harry, before the next clash before them. Still, though, he glances to his daughter, Helena, nearby.
"What is our next move?" he asks her, putting her on the spot.
Dietrich
(Dietrich) What inspires Lord Dietrich Otrese? If people could figure that out, he may seem less chaos and more understood. It is as if the whims of fate always seem to put him in favorful opportunties or moments like this. The ones where people may not know why he's there, how long he's been there or if he's always been there.
Not unlike the great feline companions of their 'enemies', he just seems to turn up out of some void. One moment it's a serious scouting party. The next minute, it's a PARTY scouting. Same same, but different. The man owns a white horse and he is sat upon it. He's not taking point because that's how one ruins their face. He's not in the back because that's how we get ambushed. He is comfortably in the middle, with other meat shi-- people around him. He is also drinking out of what mine be a wine skin as he studies the felines.
"I think I shall leave with one of those." A pause from the Empress' favorite cousin (that's Dietrich). "For science of course." Does he even have a blade or anything for defense?
Urumil
(Urumil) Giant cats are not something that fits well within Urumil's experience but then neither is this cold land. He is at once under and over dressed for the conditions. Silk where there should be wool and so many layers of wool where it exists that it must be like a furnace inside. He's frowning over at the cats as the conversation begins, only looking up at Dietrich mentions wanting to leave with one. "We could build a trap. Then, when they loose them on us, we can claim as many as we wish."
Despina
(Despina)
The Knights of the Custodian Order are not known for their stealthy attire by any metric. Dame Despina Kournis rides atop a war horse, itself armored in whites and gold, wearing the White metal plates of her order, trimmed in gold with her white blonde hair slicked back out of her face as the company shadows the force they've been dispatched to harry.
Each breath on the tundra comes out as steam and she can feel the cold through the padding beneath her armor. She can feel it in her knuckles wrapped about the blade on her hip as her horse sways to a stop near the Governor and his daughter. The unfettered of her hands strokes the mane of her war companion, that bays and shivers, but the Knight's cool grey eyes watch the distance amidst the calvary accompanying them.
As the governor has deferred to his daughter, so too does Despina. Turning in her sattle to regard Helena.
Helena
Helena has been her typical serene self, never complaining nor even showing the slightest annoyance for the hardships of traversing the Expanse. At her father's question, she regards him for a moment, and then stares off towards the horizon, where the raiders and their big cats lie.
"Wait until they're on disadvantageous ground, preferably with the river before them." Helena quietly replies, her tone as cold as the blustery white landscape. "The beasts warrant some caution, and we want to leave them no escape."
Ada
(Ada) The scouting party has drawn to a halt for the moment. It's a mix of light cavalry scouts, along with a detachment of the far more heavily armed and more fearsome Ice Wolves of Vilslev, and a contingent of the Knights Custodian, among whom Despina is the ranking officer.
The scouts would know there is at least one minor river between them and the raiders, and more hills, in this area at least, than is the norm for the Expanse.
Bogdan
(Bogdan) There is a faint nod of agreement from Bogdan at Helena's assessment. "Let us get a better view of their number from the hills, and then drive them towards the river, where we can hit and fade," states the Governor, both to the other Albanaski, and to Despina, turning to the Knight Custodian to see if she concurs with the assessment.
"Our number has been training to confront the cats as necessary. Keep them at distance with spear and torch. Don't let them close and pounce. For today, I shall hope we can keep them at range with bow."
Dietrich
(Dietrich) The smile curves Dietrich's lips easily and look the dimple, but no smolder. They are all good. "Yes, we could trap one, but I think I would like to find a small one and then we could report on how it's raised." He listens to those talking around him. A wave given to Bogdan. "Hello again.." He does not say goven'ah, but he wants to.
It looks to the other three. He lifts his hand up to run through his hair. He'll follow the others, for now.
Despina
(Despina)
Despina nods when the Governor turns towards her, "The cats will be a problem, but they require handlers. As we've seen." Her hand strokes the chestnut mane of her mount, patting just up from one massive, armored, flank. "If we can manuever archers on a ridge and take out those handlers, we can potentially turn a disadvantage into a chaos amongst their rank."
She turns and nods to the light calvary, "pressure their flanks with a split division of light calvary in the disorder and run our heavy Knights up their front line, pushing them towards the rivers edge. If we can get them to engage from those hilltops." She juts her chin out towards the hills. "Use the landscape to our advantage where their numbers will have to close in for shallow crossing."
Either way, "Regardless, we need a better vantage point."
Arrival
Bogdan arrives.
Ada
(Ada) Moving to the hillier ground necessitates some slower progress on the part of the various riders, and they might not fight on it, but the overwhelming majority are carrying bows with them, and the view from there is generally rather superior. Of course, if one can see something, there is a good chance that it can see one in return.

Urumil
Urumil smiles when Dietrich speaks of catching a small one. Rubbing his hands together in an attempt to stave off frostbite he's sure has already struck. "Where do they keep the little ones do you suppose?"
Bogdan
(Bogdan) "Likely in a cage to make them mean and aggressive," mutters Bogdan, in response to Urumil as he tugs the reins on his horse, looking to make sure she is sure-footed on the hilly terrain. He is not the horseman he once was, but he has decades of experience planning for battle to make up for it.
"Can't see much so far," he mutters. "Some raiders at the front, a few of those beasts. Miles away there are advanced elements of the big force." He places his hand over his eyes to take it in.

Dietrich
(Dietrich) "So, you have scouted these cats before?" Dietrich offers in a sort of off handed manner. He brushes his hair from his face as he looks out over the tundra for a few moments. "They are all the same size really." His eyes are tracking one it seems, perhaps so he can snatch it. "As well, slight concern maybe. These are like monsterous things and one is you know, sprinting towards us now."
Despina
(Despina)
Despina advances with the others, but tugs the reins in the direction of far more uneven terrain. "Shhh.." Said as she unsaddles herself and starts up the side of the out cropping. It's not smooth going in her armor, in the heavy cloak thrown over top of it. The slick rocks and uneven footing gives way under her boots, very nearly sending her sliding unceremoniously back down the side if not for the way she pushes off with her left ankle. The landing isn't pretty, not at all.
It's downright embarrassing by the look on her face.
Red cheeks could be from the biting cold, but the muscles in her jaw clench showing no small amount of inner anger as she takes a couple steps towards her horse. Hoping on every second step to her left ankle. Cold grey eyes narrow at the cropping, while she deliberately faces her war horse, who looks back at her like he's absolutely flemox what the hell she just thought she was going to do.
Urumil
Urumil is rubbing at his arms for warmth when he hears Dietrich's announcement and practically falls off his horse trying to swivel around to see this impending monster.
Helena
Helena listens to the chatter and the strategy being devised by some. When her father speaks, she gives a little nod and begins to pass orders down the line and do the work of actually making sure everyone knows where they're supposed to be, and supposed to be doing when they get there. She and some of the sergeants have words, there's some gesturing from the Albalaski commander but she never raises her voice. Her instructions are reassuringly calm and her aura glacial.
When everything is arranged, she rides up to Bogdan's side about when the group finally has the enemy in sight. Nothing is said. She simply nods. The archers and calvalry begin to move to their positions.
Did she see Despina? Maybe, but Helena is polite enough to not make sport of her if so.
Bogdan
(Bogdan) "Do you see anything?" asks Bogdan of Despina, looking over at the other Commander, of the Knight Custodian detachment, to take stock of things. His lips are pressed in a line, trying to take stock, nodding in return to Helena.
"You and your obsession with these cats," snaps the old man at Dietrich. "Unless one is abou to be on top of us, I don't want to hear anothe . . ." Oh. One is about to be on top of them.
"Bows and torches!" he shouts to the Lonin scouts. "Just as we drilled!"
Ada
(Ada) Dietrich's warning might bring notice to more than one beast that has lurched into motion. It's hard to judge speed, from this far away, but it is fast. Almost plucked away entirely by the wind comes the sound of a terrible, distant shriek.
A number of raiders on foot begin to converge to proceed along a gully. There are none with horses or any other sort of mount, though. The fast pace here derives entirely from the beasts they have with them.
At Bogdan's order, weapons are readied, and a number of torches lit up, with some scouts stepping to the fore with long spears.

Dietrich
(Dietrich) "Look, sometimes things just get my interest. Things also bore me just as... oh, I feel like //that// can't be good." Dietrich offers a bit as he's watching them round up. "So one is paring off to the side but then I sort of lost track of it. Which means it could be soon behind us, around us. You know, do what your heart tells you, but maybe be aware of that."
Despina
(Despina)
"Knights! To the front with your shields. Protect the archers." Despina unslings her own shield off her back and yanks her blade out of the scabbard on her hip. Walking through the pain in her ankle to position herself, and her knights, betwixt beast and scouts.
The terrain continues to be a bane for the heavily armored Knights, Despina amongst them. They move to the front, but it's not nearly as coordinated as she'd like. Rocks giving way underfoot. Cold Weather causing armor to grind, swords to stick in the scabbard. The line is ill formed. The shields barely in position in anything resembling timely.

Bogdan
(Bogdan) "Steady! Steady, Warriors of Lonin!" shouts Bogdan, his baritone voice clear and true over the chill air of the hill, his voice carrying as he watches the cats bound closer to them. "We have faced worse and will face worse again." He keeps his steed close to the front, unworried and ready to lead. He reaches to his pack to draw a torch, to be a beacon for the scouts and to serve as a deterrent for the cats.
Urumil
Urumil quickly turns in hope that this cat that Dietrich has mentioned is not in fact right behind them.
Ada
(Ada) The shrieking of the beasts rises and rises further in volume, to a horrendous pitch. They are converging as one. The maw of the foremost among them widens to a hideous extent, more than is right for any animal, exposing rows of sharp teeth. Flights of arrows land among them, and a couple are wounded, but they surge farther forwards, tearing into the Lonin ranks. They are kept off to an extent by the warders, but they have found gaps, and leap on them.
There is immediate carnage among the soldiers of the Commonwealth, and a few of the lighter-armed warriors balk, already wavering.
The beast that looped around comes surging forwards from the back, and ends up barrelling into Urumil, bruising him, but not causing major wounds.
Helena
Helena is quietly supportive of her father, since he's back in his element. She works as a lieutenant, relaying commands and making sure the line holds, which is a going concern as the beasts shriek and knees threaten to shake from more than cold.

Urumil
Urumil yelps as he discovered that the massive giant fang-tastic cat is indeed /right there/. He has just about enough time to bring up his sword and duck before the creature slams into him. So much for his intention to stay on the horse today. Theres a lot of snarling and punching, rolling around, attempted biting and a few attempted stabbings.

Dietrich
(Dietrich) "Well this is just a cat-strophe." Dietrich offers as he is about to get catted. He did get a cat like he wanted but now he's got to flee it or something. As he's attempting to move around the area to try and shake the kitty cat. He also tries to perform very intimidating and in control. A boom to his deeper voice as he offers, "STAY! SIT!" Scare the beast with awe and fear.

Bogdan
(Bogdan) This, of course, is the risk with training. One can train and train, but at the end of the day, that training needs to make first contact with the enemy. So it is here.
Whatever Bogdan actually thinks when the cats hit the ranks, ripping into the light armored scouts, he does not show it on his face. "From bows to spears!" he shouts, as if this is all just as he planned. "What you do today, you do for your families and comrades tomorrow! Drive them back, Warriors!"
Despina
(Despina)
The fighting has commence. Despina tosses down her shield in favor of a double handed grip on her blade as one of the massive beasts leaps directly the line of Knights who just barely managed to position themselves betwixt the beast and Lonin Scouts. She moves quickly, for a woman wearing as much armor as she does, in unfamiliar climates and swings her blade outward narrowly missing one of th creatures that moves twice as fast as she could have predicted it.
The tip of her sword cuts through fur on the fore leg, but only narrowly cuts flesh and then the monsterously large animal is squared up. Snarling in the White armored Knight's direction as she stalks forward over the rocks underfoot. Determination on her face, leather bound grip tightening around her sword hilt. "On with it then!" She snarls right back at him.
Fearless in the face of the creature twice her size and three times her speed.
Ada
(Ada) As the fray continues, the pack of hideous, shrieking creatures is increasingly held at bay. After the initial, harsh clash, the warriors of Lonin have rallied significantly. Spears are readied, and they close in. The one held off by Despina fails to find a route that does not involve impaling itself, and as she stands it down, more Custodians press down the slope towards it, penning it in -- there is little escape now but one which gets it past the ranks of gold-cloaked warriors.
Sadly for Dietrich, the beast does not appear to speak Wendish, and surges instead towards a trio of encroaching Ice Wolves, one of whom promptly embeds a throwing axe in the monster's gaping maw.
The one intent on Urumil and Helena cannot close the distance on either, not entirely.
Ada
(Ada) Out on the tundra, meanwhile, the raiders on foot are not approaching further. No -- they are watching. And as beasts begin to be struck down, some of those raiders are dispatched, running across the tundra, northward bound, towards the still distant main body.

Bogdan
(Bogdan) "See!" barks Bogdan, triumphant, as the scouts manage to steady themselves and push against the beasts rushing against them, seeing some of the momentum shift. "Just as we drilled! The Warriors of Lonin stand tall against the Terror!"
"Get those runners! Do not let them reach the main body!" he shouts. "Drive down the hills and run the beasts back!"
At Bogdan's command, a detachment of scouts peels off, easily cutting down the attempted messengers. Human on human, there is no chance.
Urumil
Urumil is panting and filthy by the time he finally manages to apply the pointy end of his sword to the vicious cat. Climbing up from where he was all but wrestling with the cat he looks for Helena and offers her a quick "Thank you." He toes the corpse of the cat with the tip of his boot. Just in case its faking. Only then, when he's finally convinced the creature isn't going to leap up and yell surprise does he start looking to see what the forces around him are actually doing.
Despina
(Despina)
Blood has splattered across her armor from Scout or Knight cut down around her. Coating the Golden plates with a painting of crimson that runs upwards where it meets alabaster skin at her neck and jaw. Even cornered, these creatures are dangerous and Despina is in a dance with it. A half dozen of her Knight brothers and sisters circle, exchanging blows or narrowly missing ones sent their way. The blonde haired Knight ducks beneath a swipe and swings her blade in a controlled upward slash that cuts deep into the inside of the attacking paw.
Death by a thousand paper cuts.
A knight is struck when the beast leaps around and catches him across the armor. She's sent flying back up the hill they'd been pressing the beast down. He crashes amidst the other soldiers and Despina is there to fill that void, ducking to one side with her blade clutched in her left hand, beneath a bleeding paw swiping in her direction, to slam the pummel of her sword in against the gnarly scars on the cats maw.
Another crimson streak runs down the back of her left arm, which sits tight against her left side. Large gashes in the golden plates where a trio of claw marks are visible on the back of her bicep.
Dietrich
(Dietrich) You know he asked for the cat. This might somehow be Dietrich's fault. When the cat on him, falls back with an axe in his mouth. Dietrich does what he does best. He pauses to take a drink. Alcohol waits for no party! He also rounds a torch to get a better look. However...
Then the brave Sir Rob-- Lord Dietrich blows that liquid from his mouth through the torch to pretty much make himself a flame thrower. And people said party tricks weren't important. The feline? It catches fire, even though they are on the tundra.
Ada
(Ada) A cheer rises from among the ranks of Lonin's warriors, and they press their advantage against the beasts. Shaken though they were from the harsh initial clash, they have rallied.
As Dietrich sets the one with the axe in its maw alight, more heavily-armoured Ice Wolves close in, hacking at it to ensure it is fully dead, then one goes to help haul the Otrese lord to his feet, with a very unnoble-like clap on the shoulder before he presses towards the one engaged by Urumil and Helena, but with no need, as it is finally brought down.
The unit of Custodians about Despina close in further. None match her ability, but the beast is held in place, shrieking and thrashing though it is, until blow after blow fells it.
The riders despatched by Bogdan rapidly close the ground towards the runners, several hundred yards away, then, having dealt with them, whooping, they begin to loose arrows towards the other raiders on foot -- none of whom came with anything to deal with riders bar these beasts. The scouts circle, out of reach, exhibiting long years of experience of doing exactly this to an ill-prepared foe.
Ada
(Ada) As for the company's task? There's no immediate obstacle, not for now, to one closing the way towards the main body to see what they can see.

Bogdan
(Bogdan) As the cats are surrounded and the runners are cut down, Bogdan rides forward, his hand over his eyes, gazing out in the distance. Whatever he can take stock of is unclear, but he does frown as he takes in the sight of the incoming beasts.
"Ah. They also have some large mammoths at the rear of the body," says the Governor. "We . . . did not drill for that."
Despina
(Despina)
Despina stands, stumbles, and is caught by her Knight brethren.
As impressive a display it may have been; Despina fighting... watching her try to get on her horse? Probably not as much so. She's got dozens of small wounds and larger wounds on her arms. A sprained ankle from tumbling down the side of a hill earlier and a horse that's kind of not enjoying being around these large, very dangerous, cats. "Deli stop.." She swipes at the reins, but the war horse saunters to the side out of reach, very nearly dragging the Golden Armored Knight with her.
She very nearly misses talk of mammoths.
She does not miss a big horse tail slapping her in the blood smeared alabaster face. Grey eyes cut towards the animal and glare.
Another tail smack.
Absolutely disrespectful.
Dietrich
Dietrich hauls one of the monster cats over his pretty white horse. The horse is not impressed. Then as if that's not bad enough, he rides TOWARDS the masses and looks it over. He reins back the horse and comes back towards the group. "It looks like there are a handful of black-armoured figures with the raiders. They appear to be acting as officers. As well, they are more a horde in grouping then a disciplined army." He speaks like he knows some military theory or something. He offers with that confident manner of his. "I would personally worry about their rage fighting if they are just clustered and not disciplined."
Depart
Urumil departs.
