Arrival
Orestes arrives.
Arrival
Andreas arrives.
Arrival
Kamzu arrives.
Ada
(Ada) Park Hall is absolutely bustling, with a multitude of finely-dressed guests arriving to the ballroom and packing out every other space in the building, be it the genteel lounge out in the parlour, or the terrace restaurant. The organiser of the evening's festivities is the proprietor of Park Hall, a well-heeled, middle-aged Adanan woman called Zoe, or as she terms herself, Zoe of the Hall. She is constantly on the go, ensuring that guests (most of them paying, even if someone else arranged it) are properly provided for by the staff. A gentleman with a booming voice stands by the ballroom's entrance to announce arrivals, which is done with all possible pomp, and as many monikers as he can conceive of. The band in the gallery is already playing, providing lively ambience, though not dancing music, yet.
Arrival
Melissa arrives.
Janina
Janina arrives in a lovely gown in shades of Fletza blue and grey. Fresh off a boat returned from goodness knows where, one might even still smell the salt of the sea in her hair when she passes by. Golden strands have been hastily bound into a braided bun at the nape of her neck, just borderline presentable, with a few wisps straying free here and there. With a gracious smile for the gentleman announcer, she bows her head and first seeks a beverage to bolster herself.
Ada
(Ada) "Janina Fletza of Chelm, mariner and explorer!" booms the announcer, presumably apprised of likely arrivals and ready to let everyone know. Beverages are readily available to any seeking them, with a sommelier to hand to assist.
Arrival
Theon arrives.
Eliza
(Eliza) Who says there's not dancing music yet? Eliza's feet are already tapping the minute she steps through the door and when she's announced she twirls around so that the Albalaski red and gold of her skirts sweep the ankles of those around her, giving an extremely low and dramatic curtsy to the entire room before she pops up and bounces on her slippered toes. Clapping her hands together in delight, she surveys the room with bright eyes and an even more brilliant smile to find her first victim. Friend. To find her first friend!
Orestes
(Orestes) Orestes approaches the ballroom wearing a flowing sea green tunic and indigo silk breeches, trailed by attendants clad in the polychrome uniforms of House Kournis. The attendants are dismissed with a quick gesture, and as he crosses the threshold, Orestes gives the gentleman announcer a quick smile before he slips off toward the outskirts of the ballroom, scanning the gathered nobles for new and familiar faces.
Victor
(Victor) Striding into the bustling ballroom with a floor-length golden coloured cape draping behind him, King Victor Vanzek is keeping a young member of his retinue busy before arriving through the ballroom doors. Poor member of staff being made to ensure the King's crown is sitting properly on his silver-brushed blonde hair as well as the pompous fluff of fur around his collar. Doublet, doublebreasted, called for while dark boot hose with long pointed shoes are all finishing off the look. The King of the Commonwealth arriving in and awaiting a member of staff to stand, to attention, beside him to see to his needs.
Ada
(Ada) "Eliza Albalaski of Vilslev, a dedicated representative of her house and supporter of the defence of Lonin!" comes the announcer's voice -- that one took some creative interpretation on the part of whoever supplied him with his note. "Prince Orestes Kournis, brother to and emissary of the Queen of Dyria!" follows next, and the announcer finds the time to smile back before he has to get his breath for the next announcement. "King Victor of the Commonwealth of Hana and Lonin, thus chosen by the sejm, Boyar of House Vanzek, master of the Prosna Valley!" comes the next announcement.
Andreas
(Andreas) Into the ballroom lumbers Andreas, clad in a bright red and yellow tunic. He's careful to move aside for the King, bowing briefly to him before he strides off towards the nearest place to find wine. His voice can be heard across the ballroom as he calls for "Whatever you've got, the wetter the better!" It's wine, Andreas, not a pond.
Melissa
Melissa pauses within the entrance with the practice and patience of a woman who has been introduced at similar events more times than she is able to truly remember, offering the man a polite dip of her head in response once he has concluded her formal presentation. Though she begins to move past and into the room proper, her steps stop and she once more turns to the announcer, "we shall have to work on spicing up some of those in the future. The Political Mastermind of Malthi? The Ambitious Aetos? The Beautiful..." and her lips curve slightly as if she doesn't have to add anything to that particular one. Then her steps continue for a few until she gets out of the way, the gown of green the same color as her eyes swirling about her frame as she once more falls silent to wait for her entourage to receive their own introductions.
Janina
(Janina) With a glass of fine red wine in hand, Janina lingers not terribly far from the entrance to observe the arrivals with a keen eye. Eliza's twirl of vibrant fabric catches her eye and elicits a smile, Orestes receives a gracious nod, and her King gets both a respectful bow and a brighter expression in greeting. "Your Majesty, how lovely to see you." Andreas barreling forth by her for the drinks elicits a sudden and warm laugh. "Excellent priorities."
Eliza
(Eliza) "I am," Eliza nods, cheerful tone carrying to the general crowd around her since she's not actually addressing any one person, "An extremely dedicated representative of my house and supporter of Lonin. But also a capable dancer and conversationalist! Ooooooh, did you see the King?" She leans in (up?) to say to Andreas as she too gets a drink, "I bet it took three people to get that crown to stay straight. They're terribly heavy. Not that I've ever worn one. Well, once, but I shouldn't talk about it because I got in a LOT of trouble that day." She sighs wistfully as she picks up a glass of whatever happens to be nearest, "Worth it."
Theon
Theon follows in Melissa's wake, with the narrow-eyed look and hands-in-pockets hunch of a born introvert being dragged out of his shell for his own good. Or something like that. To be honest, Theon's not entire sure how he was talked into this, but here he is. At his duchess' words he gives a faint snort. "Are those all for you, cos? Or can be the Beauty of Dyria?" He looks around as if trying to find the darkest corner that is the furthest away from conversation or, hell no, dancing.
Ada
(Ada) "Lord Andreas Karalis, the Bull of Trapezus!" the announcer calls, and maybe more was due to come as part of that introduction, but a Dyrian noble from a minor house has perked up at the name and exclaimed, "My lord!" to him, without quite being prepared for the reasonableness of the follow-through, namely, "I was just saying that I have never met anyone stronger, and that maybe you might give a display, and..." He trails off a bit feebly -- it is a ballroom. Melissa's announcement came to the extent of, "Duchess Melissa Aetos, ruler of Malthini and of Taras, grand reformer," which certainly doesn't match the colour perhaps expected, and then, "Lord Theon Aetos, the diligent," which, well, is probably more colour than expected for Theon.
Kamzu
(Kamzu) Kamzu arrives at the ballroom and does not wait for the announcer. He walks in with a steady pace, nodding once to the doorman, and continues into the room to wander and investigate. His honor guard holds at the threshold. He smooths his sleeves with one quick motion and sets his hands behind his back. He moves along the room's edge, eyes taking in the band, the drink tables, and the nearest exits. He stops at a tray and says to the sommelier, calm and polite, "Water, please." He studies the balcony and the flow of guests, then gives small nods to those who meet his gaze. When Eliza twirls near, he steps back to give her space and offers a brief smile. He keeps walking, measuring the hall and its corners without hurry.
Ada
(Ada) With the approach of Kamzu, the announcer, forewarned about an unknown and novel quantity in the city, is thorough: "Exalted Sufet Kamzu Phavah, ruler of Anput and Meseh, the Lion of the Labyrinth, the Obsidian Sentinel, and the Stone Sufet of the Sun!" He needs to take a short breath after that one.
Arrival
Kostas arrives.
Victor
(Victor) Lifting his chin up, the air in the room is catching King Victor's face and features for a passing dramatic moment so people can lend their attention and eyes to him. To focus and greet him, standing with his hands resting on his sides for a tick or two. "Wine. Locally sourced wine." Speaking to a mmeber of staff, Victor's eyes are upon them before catching the explorer Janina's eyes over to him, "Good to see you." His voice softly escaping his lips as he is stepping further into the room, taking a passing glass of the local wine to lace through his fingertips.
Kostas
(Kostas) Dressed in a loose, bright green tunic with some black trim, and a golden sash draped over his shoulder, Kostas ambles into the ballroom, probably not late enough to be fashionable. He pushes onto his toes at the entrance to see who he can see, then proceeds further, smiling as he takes in the proceedings.
Andreas
(Andreas) Andreas snorts at the idea of the crown being heavy. "I could lift it with my little finger," he tells Eliza, quirking the edge of a grin to her as he picks up a delicate wine glass in one large hand. He holds it between thumb and forefinger, careful not to break it as he sips from it. He tilts his head at Eliza, thoughtful. "It would suit you," he tells her. The Dyrian noble that approaches him gets a grin and a clap on the back that probably sends him half way across the room. "That's because there *is* no one stronger! Perhaps a *feat* or two will rear its head tonight!"
Ada
(Ada) "Lord Kostas Kournis, noted alumnus of the University of Sanctuary and cousin to the Queen of Dyria!" booms the announcer's voice. The noble who had approached Andreas is winded by the slap on the back, not that it seems to dampen his mood in the slightest. "Looking forward to it!" he proclaims, then he gets back to his companions.
Melissa
Melissa slips her hand within the crook of Theon's elbow, the touch one part comfort to the poor man and his lack of interest in all things social and just a sprinkle of threat in the smaller woman to keep him from running away to whatever dark corner he most likely wishes to fade into. "I have faith that you can be anything your heart desires, Theon, but I think all that frowning will give you wrinkles before they should be seen and instead of beauty they might exchange it for the Dour Dyria. It might stick more, everyone loves alliteration. We shall find you a friend by the end of the night," this is said as if it might be the only reason they attended, surprise!
Orestes
(Orestes) Orestes returns Janina's greeting in kind as he weaves his way between the assembled nobility. He collects a glass of honeyed wine from a serving trap mid-step, taking a quick sip to wet his mouth before deciding to approach the Aetos duo. "Your grace, my lord." He bows to them, as formally as he can manage with wine in hand, and as he straightens a smile curves across his lips. "Titles aside, it has always been my opinion that all of House Aetos is beautiful in both body and mind."
Theon
(Theon) "A friend? Ah, my situation is even worse than I feared." Theon looks over the gathering, suddenly suspicious that any one of them could be a friend in the making. "I'm okay with Theon the diligent. It suggests that they only know one thing about me, but that's one more thing than most." He winces when Kostas is introduced and murmurs, "Imagine your claim to fame being someone else. Tt." When Oretes approaches, Theon offers a nod. "Your highness." The prince's compliment earns him a grimace. "I'm blushing."
Ada
(Ada) Up in the gallery, the conductor comes to the appointed time to move towards music suited to dances. It is at least for the moment a piece well suited to a stately, slow dance. A number of attendees take it as a cue to take to the floor, though many more yet mingle, circulating to converse, or on occasion to just find further beverages.
Eliza
Eliza lifts a hand to fluff her golden hair, tastefully pulled back in a complicated braid, but loose enough to frame her face, "It would, wouldn't it? Not that specific one," a glance to Victor as she takes a sip, "Obviously. That one seems weighty indeed. But perhaps tiaras will be in fashion this season. You never know! They do tend to rub blisters in the top of ones head, but they look great!" She gives a smile to the noble that talks with Andreas, one eye brow raising in amusement at how he keeps his feet at the clap to the back, "I think we shall see a great many feats tonight." When Kostas is announced Eliza goes up on her tiptoes and waves at him exuberantly, "That's my friend Lord Kostas. Have you met him? You should meet him, he's great!"
Janina
(Janina) "Anyone up for a dance? I'm hoping my feet aren't too rusty from months of sailing," Janina wonders aloud, eyebrows lifted as she scopes out potential partners in the crowd while sipping the last of her wine glass. Nothing like liquid courage to loosen up for the music.
Andreas
(Andreas) Andreas hums, thinking about it. "Perhaps they will. I have never been one for following fashions. I don't think a tiara would suit me, though," he ponders, patting the top of his head. There's a shrug after a moment, though h grins. "Feats perhaps. Certainly many *feets*." He laughs at his own joke, whether or not Eliza does. He turns his head when Eliza points out Kostas. "We've likely crossed paths at some point or another, I'm sure," he says.
Kostas
(Kostas) Kostas cheerfully adds an addition to the announcer's bit on him. "I also spent many fine hours about this park in my youth." So many people for him to see though. He lifts a hand aloft to wave back at Eliza. "Hello, friend!" he calls. He's now in a waving mood, so he waves, a brisk, vigorous wave, at Orestes, and since they so happen to be in the same direction, the others there who he's not related to, Melissa and Theon. Then he continues towards Eliza and Andreas, smiling broadly. "Why, yes!" he says to Janina, "But I always am, and I did just arrive, and golly," he says as he takes stock of Andreas. "My lord, if I am not much mistaken, you must be Andreas Karalis, or else he is going to have to come to see if there is somebody even stronger than him. I am Kostas Kournis."
Victor
(Victor) Guiding his shrewd, earthy brown eyes in the direction where his ears are picking up crowns-and-kings conversations, His Majesty Victor's attention is for a moment across to Eliza and Andreas. A moment to himself has the King swirling his glass of wine as he is cradling it in his palm, bringing it near his nose to savour the scent opening up before sipping somewhat back. Catching it on his tongue while flicking his eyes up as the music is picking up. As members around the crowd are starting to dance, starting to mingle. Allowing him a moment to sit back and observe just as he is picking a moment to step forth. "As heavy as the crown may be--" Victor's head dipping slightly to both Eliza and Andreas, "It is not the gold that causes it, but the promises it carries."
Melissa
(Melissa) Without removing her hold on her cousin, Melissa offers the approaching Orestes a graceful curtsey, "Prince Kournis, we both know that is far from the truth and much like pretty costume jewelry, there have been some that might have been pretty to look at but at the end of the day were worthless baubles that crumbled beneath any weight which may have found them. You are a sweet talker though, which I always appreciate." Turning to look upwards towards Theon then assuring him, "you are not a bauble." Kostas' greeting is returned with a polite wiggle of her fingers in his direction. "Do you dance?" this is asked to both of her current companions.
Ada
(Ada) A few minor Commonwealth nobles take an acute interest in Janina's question about a dance -- a Fletza! What an opportunity for them to make a fresh acquaintance, and from by a fair margin the wealthiest Hanan house. None actually head her way /yet/, though, between having conversations with others, having drinks to finish, and so on.
Kamzu
(Kamzu) Kamzu keeps his attention bouncing back and forth among the people in attendance, but is hesitant to join any particular conversation or interaction. Instead, he just watches the social play that takes place, studying the important denizens of Sanctuary for how they respond to each other. He finds much of the interaction to be confusing and puzzling but fitting to what he was coached about what he'd encounter in this part of the empire. His piercing eyes flick from compliment to compliment, studying for context and understanding as he sips his drink to pass the time.
Orestes
(Orestes) "I meant no embarrassment, my lord." With a chuckle, Orestes shifts his cup to his other hand so that he can return Kostas' wave. "I should be glad to make introductions if you'd like to meet my cousin Kostas," he continues, turning back to Theon. "He's graduated from the University, which is no small feat in itself, and I think you'll find him as good of an intellectual sparring partner as any other." When Melissa extends her invitation, Orestes demurs. "Your grace, I would be so honored, but family must come first. I'll defer to Lord Theon on this question."
Janina
(Janina) Sensing a potential opening, Janina slides closer to Kostas, Eliza, and Andreas with a pleasant smile that crinkles the corners of her eyes. Spying a few fellow Commonwealth eyes her way, her fingers flutter in a familiar fashion with the implied assurance that she will be happy to entertain their company on the dance floor for a time. "I hope I have missed much excitement in my absence? The best part about coming back are all the stories to catch up on!"
Ada
(Ada) The presence of Kamzu remains a curiosity to some in the hall. Society in Sanctuary has become accustomed to the frequent presence of the exalted nobility of Hadash -- it has been thirty years since the abrupt and surprising move by the realm to join itself to the empire, after all, and even before that, merchant vessels were well-known -- but not to the Phavahs, who kept to themselves for far longer. A few nobles pass by near the sufet to offer polite greetings, introductions, though rarely to tarry.
Theon
(Theon) "I could be a bauble. Perhaps for a funeral. Or a trade negotiation. A festive trade negotiation. With baubles. Gray ones." Theon nods to Orestes. "I try not to spar, intellectually or otherwise, but I look forward to meeting with him." He looks around at the various knots of people, snorting with faint amusement at the minor nobles who get all excited for a dance, only to find themselves having to consider one another. "Cousin, could I perhaps get you a drink? I promise, this is not an excuse to disappear in the name of getting you a drink from home. Though that would have been a good gambit."
Eliza
Eliza does laugh at Andreas' joke, "That's most certain to be true, especially after a long night of dancing!" When the King speaks to them her focus snaps his way. "Your majesty," Eliza gives a proper curtsy now that she's been addressed, "I am sure that is true. It is quite striking, though!" When Janina asks if someone wants to dance her eyes light up, "Oh, oh! I do! But I make it a point to always pick someone to dance with for the first dance that doesn't actually look like they want to. It's more fun, you know?" She certainly sounds enthused about it, gaze lingering on Kamzu and Theon in particular. The friendly calculation of a socialite ready to ruin some introvert or new comers good wall flower time.
Arrival
Irreth arrives.
Andreas
(Andreas) "Well I hope not, I'm not sure I could beat myself in a fight!" Andreas agrees with Kostas, winking at him. "A pleasure to be formally introduced," he says with a little bow of his head. The King's interjection has him turning towards him. "Your majesty. I have never tried to weigh a promise, I suppose." To Janina and Eliza he steps carefully aside, still drinking his wine. "I need more alcohol before I dance. And even then I would worry about stepping on your feet."
Kostas
(Kostas) Kostas has a big smile ready to go for Melissa and Orestes, then his attention is back to those closer to hand. "Stories!" he says to Janina. "I could certainly make up one or two. The first to come to mind features mysteriously vanishing dancers as a basic idea though, which would be dreadful for the mood." He nods vigorously to Andreas. "By reputation, my lord, why, you could overcome anything!" Kostas smiles once more at Eliza. "It is, is it not? Why, you seem to have spotted two most likely candidates! Go forth and impose spectacular dance upon them, my friend!" Between his chatter, Kostas extends a smile to Victor, too, picking up on who he is quickly enough. "Your majesty, a delight and a pleasure. Kostas Kournis."
Victor
(Victor) Closer to the conversation, the light overhead is catching and reflecting off a wide golden band worn heavily across King Victor's chest from his shoulders keeping that floor-length cape up over him. His lips thinning for a moment, pulling them into his mouth as those shrewd eyes are going from Eliza to Andreas. "It gets the attention in a room." Speaking first to Eliza, "Pleasure to meet you though." Moving those eyes after to Andreas as he is adding on, "I do not recommend weighing them, it will cause wrinkles like I heard others discuss. On the topic of dance though." Pausing, glancing across to the floor itself. "If none shall step forward, then I will dance with the first that wishes to be the shock and scandal of the court." His hand lifting up, Victor's fingertips are turning out along with his palm while an affable smile is towards Kostas. "Pleasure as well, Lord Kournis."
Arrival
Panos arrives.
Kamzu
(Kamzu) Kamzu gives polite greetings to the nobles that pass by, but all it takes is a look from the House Phavah Sufet to send them on their way. His studying reserved for only a few specific people that have already been predetermined. And those not on the list were not very likely to deter Kamzu from his mission. If the megafauna of the Labyrinth couldn't do it, a few self-important individuals in Sanctuary didn't stand a chance. When Eliza looks his way, he looks back with an implacable stare that dares her to try to get him to dance. He doesn't draw his eyes from hers and yet a twitch of his eyebrow somehow indicates that he advises her to try Theon instead. Or anyone else. Idly, he wonders if he's doing himself a favor or her. Likely both.
Melissa
(Melissa) "I have one," Melissa tells Theon easily enough, looking far too innocent as she proceeds to reach out and take the glass from Orestes' hand, his shifting it from one to the other made the theft easier than it would have otherwise. To prove the point home, her eyes find Theon in an unblinking staredown from over the rim of the glass as she takes a sip of the liquid within. Her brow inches upward just slightly in an amused challenge before the glass is once more lowered but not returned to it's previous owner. "But I will allow you to be this drink's baby sitter if you promise to take the very best care of it," she grants Theon the very important job as she extends it towards him to take before once more addrtessing Orestes, "congratulations, you have been selected to dance as my cousin's current duties require him to be very still." She extends a helpful hand towards the Prince in invitation.
Irreth
(Irreth) If the name of the game is //fashionably late//, the Exalted Sufet Irreth is both of those things. Tonight, she's dressed in a sleek silk gown of twilight blue. It clings to her figure, glittering gold embroidery lining the hem and inlaid in the belt that cinches the waist tight. Her short dark hair is pinned up, twisted through a glittering gold circlet off which hangs a brilliant sapphire gem, positioned in the middle of her forehead. She pauses at the entrance -- not to much in deference to the announcer to recognize her -- but because she, herself, needs a moment. So many people. So many suave and glittering outfits. She takes it in with a bright-eyed air. Irreth recognizes several figures, at least, and she proceeds inside, moving with an effortless elegance in the sway of her walk. She's wearing heels which makes her already tall height even more noticeable.
Ada
(Ada) The announcer, with his booming voice, seems to take her longer pause at the entrance as a cue to extend her given titles. "Exalted Sufet Irreth Anadun, Ruler of Min and of Khepesh, and of Summer's Abode, Beloved of the Sun, Scourge of the Plains Kingdoms!"
Panos
(Panos) Attempting to slip as quietly as one can into the gathering, and moving with one of the waves of people flowing in, Panos Karalis does not cut a particularly dashing figure. The fabric of his clothing is as fine as befits his station, and the garment is well tailored enough to suggest it may have been recently acquired (probably with the aid of someone not him). He does not seem particularly troubled by the size of the crowd from his expression, though he does not seek to be at its center. Neither does he seem resentful of being here. There's an inquisitive light to his cornflower blue eyes, their intensity not diminished even if he's not narrowing them at anyone in particular, yet. Instead he stakes out a place to observe both people, trappings, and fashion, and perhaps to snag a glass of something. As his gaze washes over a few familiar people there is a very brief shadow of a smile that curves his lips.
Ada
(Ada) Panos eludes notice by the gentleman at the entrance by way of ending up lumped in with a group all at once, "Nobility of the fine houses of Kaminski, Galani and Weber!" -- evidently, he missed the presence of a Karalis in their midst.
Kostas
(Kostas) "Why, I am nothing if not shocking, your majesty! Shockingly superb, one might say, although others might say a different word!" Kostas may be taking up Victor's open invitation to dance, or he may just be chatting noisily, or both. Looking to the entrance at the further announcements, he smiles again, in the direction of Irreth and the group of nobles, but his attention is not fully taken from the people closer to hand.
Theon
Theon lifts the cup. "I shall guard it with my life. Or give it to a thirsty-looking potted plant, should I feel charitable." Though once she's extending a hand to the prince, Theon is backing his way toward the nearest window through which he could heave himself should any potential friends suddenly appear. Irreth's entrance gets a moment's pause, if only so he can murmur to himself, "Well, now I want to be the scourge of something."
Janina
(Janina) With a slightly smaller smile, Janina dips her head politely to those nearby and begins to withdraw to the edges of the crowd, likely to disappear for a time or slip away entirely. A drink is fetched on the way. One for the road.
Orestes
(Orestes) Orestes loosens his hold of the glass in his hand as soon as Melissa's intentions become clear, ensuring a smooth handover as his burden is transferred to the Duchess. "Your grace." As he accepts the offered hand and accompanies Melissa toward the floor, he spares an apologetic smile for Theon. "If you'll excuse us, my lord." Then his attention shifts toward the music and his dancing partner as he turns toward her to position himself for their first steps. "When you're ready," he tells Melissa.
Andreas
(Andreas) "I'd be quite the shock and scandal to dance with, your majesty, but I fear neither your feet nor dignity would escape unscathed," Andreas offers to the king with a grin, downing the rest of his drink and briefly stepping to the side to retrieve another. He doesn't immediately notice the arrival of his brother, though it's likely Panos has *heard* him if not seen him by now.
Eliza
(Eliza) On the one hand there's the very intimidating wallflower that clearly does not want to dance with her and on the other hand is the clearly uncomfortable in social settings introvert whose escort just left him alone. Both seem perfect, but only one has been given the chance to escape and that just cannot be allowed! "If you'll please excuse me," Eliza says to her current companions, giving Kamzu a big smile and luckily (for him) threading her way through the crowd towards the retreating Theon, using his distraction of the latest introduction to step right up to him with a dazzling smile and say, "I would love to!"
Arrival
Janina arrives.
Panos
(Panos) Amongst those in the periphery lurks Panos. Who happens to be near one of the drink bearers. Perhaps recognizing someone of a somewhat similar nature--not fleeing of course, but seeking a more interesting vantage point, he smiles as he sees Janina pass close by. He lifts his newly acquired drink in salute, though he doesn't try to impede her withdrawal. He does however offer her a wry wink as he settles in for his own people watching, still scanning the crowd now and then as if trying to spot a specific person he hasn't quite made out yet.
Irreth
(Irreth) Irreth moves through the crowd with ease. Here and there, she pauses to greet people -- many of whom are new faces, and clearly curious about not just the sufet herself, her foreign garb and manner, but also that particularly interesting announcement of her titles. There's definitely a flush of color under her skin, but it's not embarrassment. It's pleasure, at the recognition. And speaking of recognition, she spots Lord Kostas, with a group of more unfamiliar nobles. It's apparent, when Irreth path diverges to make her way toward him, with a tip of her head. "Lord Kostas. A delight to see you again so soon," as her eyes shift to his companions. "Would you care to introduce me?"
Melissa
(Melissa) In a sing-song voice Melissa calls out over her shoulder as she and Orestes turn towards the dance floor, "I know where you live," which might seem rather threatening if it were anyone else she were speaking to. But considering Theon lives down the hall from her, its more like a promise should the man commit alcohol abuse and poison an innocent plant at the same time. "I am always prepared," she then tells Orestes, her voice lowering to a more comfortable tone as she takes the tradition position of whatever dance the music indicates. "What did I just drink?" is asked suddenly, as if it has just occurred to her that she didnt actually see him get the glass she claimed.
Victor
(Victor) Guiding his earthy brown eyes across to the next announcement being made, the King of the Commonwealth is edging the corners of his eyes in as the older man's face is catching Irreth's arrival hearing the announcement being made. Victor's attentions moving back to Kostas after as he is quaffing off the last of his wine. "You have quite the energy in you, dynamic." Victor's voice is trailing lower now, the softer tones from the King before incling his head to Eliza and Andreas after. "And these -are- good quality shoes." Quipping back while Irreth is making her way closer to Kostas and himself. Glancing back to Kostas to make those introductions.
Janina
(Janina) Wine. More wine. Janina claims a fresh glass of red and slides to step near Panos with a familiar smile and lift of her glass in return. "Have you been back a while, or have you returned from anywhere exciting recently?" The scent of seawater still clings to her hair, so it's clear her own arrival has been a matter of recent hours if not less. "Need help looking for someone?"
Theon
Theon looks at Eliza. Looks to the left. Looks to the right. Then back to her. "I'm sorry, are you talking to me?" And then, "You would love to what?" Oh, god, this is someone trying to be a friend! "I'm holding this cup for my cousin. So. That's a... that's a real responsibility." This suddenly feels demeaning, but there are worse things than demeaning, like being conscripted to dance. Then, because he's a proper gentleman, he says, "I'm Lord Theon Aetos. I'm very boring AND unkind to small, adorable animals."
Kostas
(Kostas) Kostas would apparently absolutely care to introduce to Irreth whomever happens to still be in any way close by. He starts with the obvious. "This is King Victor Vanzek of the Commonwealth of Hana and Lonin, although of all the introductions, perhaps the very least necessary! Your majesty, this is Exalted Sufet Irreth Anadun, of Summer's Abode." He smiles between the two, then names some more people. "Then the really rather extraordinarily built fellow here is Lord Andreas Karalis, the Bull of Trapezus. Across the hall, if you were not acquainted, is Duchess Melissa Aetos, of Malthini and of Taras, and one of her family, I believe. And I wholly neglected to source a name, but a new acquaintance who one gathers recently returned from travels, there!" The last is said with a gesture over to Janina, and by extension Panos.
Kamzu
(Kamzu) Kamzu ticks his head downward slightly as Eliza turns towards Theon in a nod of understanding that no one else but Irreth could even possibly interpret. If he finishes his water with a single, quick gulp and sets the glass down gently on the nearest counter. He moves from that counter towards the refreshments, looking over the array that is displayed. He looks over the choices, wondering at the selection and whether he might find anything he might like. This was one area that he found was definitely better than Hadash, but that wasn't necessarily a good thing. The indulgent flavors wasn't something that he wanted to get accustomed to. Things like that made people undisciplined and lazy. He finds one of the spiced meats and takes some to stack them on a plate. A nice compromise.
Panos
Panos offers another faint smile to his fellow traveler. "Occasionally it is good to test one's survival skills in a different environment," he observes to Janina, with humor as dry as the Red Wastes that he so favors. "I will be heading back soon, though. There's never a shortage of trouble." But then his head cants curiously. "And you?" But then his bright eyes find a very familiar and hard to miss figure--near the King! There's an smile to match the brightness of is eyes then, lighting them. "My brother, Lord Andreas Karalis," he explains in his soft-spoken tone, though there's warmth in it as well, as he nods towards that group.
Depart
Ada departs.
Arrival
Ada arrives.
Janina
(Janina) "So true. I should attempt a venture on land one of these days. If there is a particularly exciting venture to arise in the wastes, do let me know?" Janina grins at Panos between long sips that seem to slowly loosen her posture with so many gathered around. "Exploring along the northern coast-- nowhere that I could give a name to as of yet, but full of adventure all the same," her eyes sparkle with mirth. Her glass is raised to Kostas and company, and Andreas as Panos points him out.
Orestes
(Orestes) "You needn't worry, your grace, although I appreciate your concern." Orestes looks toward the musicians as he attempts to gauge the timing of the music. "It was honeyed wine, and a fine vintage at that, if I may say so." Then they are off, the music and their first steps carrying them into the throng of other dancers on the floor.
Eliza
Eliza glances to the cup Theon is holding. Then around to the other people holding cups of the exact same type. While her smile never falters, there is a certain weight to her gaze which suggests this excuse isn't as good as he thinks it is, "It's been a long time since anyone ever called me adorable. I'll give you small," she muses, looking down at herself, "Though I thought these heels were quite high when they were purchased. But," she clarifies, "I would love to dance with you. You're about to ask me as a way of getting me to look past the animal part of your comment. I'm Eliza Abalaski and I would be delighted, Lord Theon! Bring the cup. It'll be fun!"
Irreth
(Irreth) The curiosity for her companions is evident in Irreth's attentive, inquisitive regard of first Victor, "Indeed," she does recognize him, at least by reputation, "I have heard tales of you, even as far as Summer's Abode. I understand your land borders the Red Waste, which makes us kin in the sense we deal with the same threat to our lands as a known constant." Hence, presumably, that affection of //Scourge//. She tips her head to each as they're introduced, but Andreas's earns a widening of eyes. "The Bull of Trapezus! Ah, I love it. Perhaps I'll wrangle the tale of how you come to adopt that moniker later," the sufet says, with a curve of lips. Irreth's eyes track Melissa, though she's heading for the dance floor, so she notes the Duchess's identity for later. "With your cousin, if I'm right, Lord Kostas," she says, with a brightening smile. Panos is familiar by association that she dips her head toward him, and by extension, Janine. "A delight. And a colorful introduction indeed. I'm afraid, my lord, you've penned yourself as my introducer, for your descriptivess brightens my soul," to Kostas, with a pleasant smile.
Andreas
(Andreas) Andreas tilts his head to Irreth, smiling at her. "It does not take that much wrangling, my lady," he says cheerfully, raising his recently-refilled glass to her. The gesture from Kostas drags his attention off in that direction and his expression breaks into a wide smile. "Brother!" his voice booms across the ballroom, waving his wineglass expressively.
Panos
(Panos) "I am not so familiar with seafaring," Panos is quick to admit. "But the times I have accompanied others have been enjoyable. Moonlight over the water is beautiful, and there are different colors than in the sunrise over the rock spires," The amusement in the lingering smile he casts Andreas' way, should his big little brother look their way, isn't a smirk but there may be a hint of a tease there, along with an impressed raise of the eyebrows at his brother's hobnobbing with the King! "There will be opportunities," he promises Jenina. "I cannot promise that you will find the badlands as beautiful as I do, but the experience will not leave you without interesting memories." And then a rare gem, as Andreas waves his wineglass across the room, he can't help but let slip a genuine laugh, raising his own glass to his brother.
Theon
(Theon) "What?" The being mean to small animals thing wasn't meant to be a challenge! Theon finds himself being drawn out onto the dance floor, still carrying the cup, seeing a future where he's wearing most of its contents. "Eliza Abalaski is a challenge to say. Back home we have these pale reptiles called alabaster lizards. Sounds a bit like Eliza Abalaski." Smoothest motherfucker here. "If you insist on making me dance, you're going to have to be patient, because it demands several things I lack." Such as a desire to do so. "But... sure. If I didn't, my brother would give me endless grief."
Victor
(Victor) Tilting down that crown laden chin of his, nodding in appreciation to Kostas, King Victor's smile is dashing up on his lips. "Thank you, Lord Kournis." Appreciating the younger nobleman while those shrewd eyes of his are moving back to Irreth. "The Commonwealth does, Exalted Sufet, as does my own House." Pausing for a moment, Victor is placing his words a fraction more strategically, "And the Terror to the North. I would be curious to hear, Exalted Sufet of the Summer's Abode both of your home and how you deal with these incursions. At a later date, rather than here in the ballroom between dances."
Eliza
(Eliza) "You're going to make me blush and then that comparison won't be valid anymore," Eliza replies with a laugh, certainly not blushing, and looking more than a little enthused about figuring out how to dance and keeping both the wine and Theon intact. After a few seconds of calculation she gets everyone's hands where they need to be, the glass clasped between theirs, "Don't worry, I'm an excellent dancer and can make up for any shortcomings so that by the end of this song, you will be the most asked for hand this evening! With the exception of the King, of course. You didn't wear a crown, so I'm afraid he's got you there."
Kostas
(Kostas) Kostas nods brisk confirmation to Irreth. "Yes! You are quite right, sufet, unless it is someone in a really remarkable disguise of my dear cousin." He gets a look across the floor as if to check this out, nods again, then smiles a broad smile to the sufet. "I am a most able introducer, and when I do not know a person, why, I can just provide a general description of them." Andreas' call of 'Brother!' gets Kostas looking across the floor again, then back and forth between him and Panos a few times. He decides to wave at Panos, but not to interrupt any conversation. The talk of defences and the like has Kostas looking briefly, curiously, between Victor and Irreth, but it is evidently not one on which he has immediate commentary to offer.
Janina
(Janina) Janina acknowledges Irreth across the way with a friendly inclination of her head and a wiggle of her wine glass as she listens to Panos describe the wastes. "We certainly are lucky to have the opportunity to see the world in so many different lights. I'd be happy to share wind of any potential forays across the sea. There's a potential set of ruins I've had my eye on for some time, it simply requires a bit of arranging the right passage in the right direction. One of these days I might have to get my own ship so I rely less upon the whims of other navigators," she quips with a waggle of expressive eyebrows.
Irreth
(Irreth) Irreth's gaze -- and attention -- settles on Victor as he pauses to give his thoughts. She is no strategist or tactician, but her /interest/ is certainly clear. "Of course, I shall be delighted to share in kind. Perhaps over some of your local vintage?" she does have a thing for tasting the drinks of other lands, it seems: it's not some line. "Once my cousin Ithobaal joins us in Sanctuary, he'll be able to provide greater detail. He's been on the fighting front for... well, since as long as I can remember, almost." And there's a note of regret, of duty, in that tone. Necessity. "But," as she spots Kostas's expression, "As you say, we shouldn't linger on such topics in such a place." The laughter of the sufet is warm, bubbling over at Kostas's comment of Orestes. Irreth's eyes are bright as she follows Kostas's gaze. "Well, you never know. I have heard that Masquerade balls are common in Sanctuary. And truthfully, I know so few people I'm as like as not to get them mixed up." Something she might've done at the races the other day, already. "Oh, but I like the challenge," Irreth replies to Andreas, with a twitch of lips. Unfortunately she has no glass to lift to him in turn, and as the Bull turns his attention to his sibling, Irreth eyes the drinks being offered about by the serving staff. "Any recommendations?" she asks, glancing at her companions. "I do like to try unusual tastes, even if it's just the once."
Victor
(Victor) "If it is my local vintage, then you can play host." Negotiations from the King of the Commonwealth, Victor's lips are flashing up into an affable smile with effortless ease to Irreth. His torso on the incline slightly towards her before turning his chin from the group to the terrace, "But do excuse me for a few moments as I need to see to some air before returning for the dances." Glancing up as the music is echoing around and still playing, Victor is moving on his toes in those long pointed shoes as the heavy crowned King is leading himself to the side for a member of his retinue to pick up his instructions.
Kamzu
(Kamzu) Kamzu stands near a column with a small plate of spiced meat. He eats in quiet bites and keeps his gaze on the doors and the edges of the room. His posture stays straight, hands neat, movements calm. He shifts a step now and then to keep a clear line of sight. His honor guard waits at the wall, still and watchful. He studies the band in the gallery and times their pauses. He notes servers weaving through the crowd and how the trays change as they pass. He watches the dancers for a moment, then returns his eyes to the exits. He sets his empty plate on a side table. He remains where he is, unhurried and silent.
Depart
Victor departs.
Arrival
Eliza arrives.
Panos
(Panos) "An admirable goal," Panos seems impressed with Jenina's plans. "But I do not doubt you will be able to achieve it. Though I do not envy you. Arranging an expedition is not without it's complications and complexities. But to do so while also maintaining a ship and her crew seems to be even more so. Did you come by seafaring early and do you also have siblings to have your back? Though my brother does not come on every expedition, as he has his own duties and pursuits, having a solid rock of support is something to cherish."
Arrival
Theon arrives.
Arrival
Panos arrives.
Andreas
(Andreas) "I'm sure if you asked my brother he'd say I'm quite the challenge," Andreas agrees with Irreth before he dips his head. "But I think I see one of my cousins I've been meaning to annoy, I will be but a moment," he says, stepping away with a polite bow. "Cousin!" he yells, going over to bother some random noble that he's probably related to.
Depart
Andreas departs.
Janina
(Janina) "It absolutely runs in the family," Janina admits with ease and pride to Panos, her smile warm and fond for her Fletza family and predecessors. "I spent some formative years in our navy, but I far preferred the freedom of the sea over military structure. So! I have explored ever since. My brother sails as well, but the structure of command suited him far more than me. I'm certain he would come if I asked nicely," she adds with a gleam of mischief in her eyes. "Let's swap stories soon over drinks? I should take my leave, but it has been lovely to catch up."
Kostas
(Kostas) Kostas offers Victor a big, cheerful smile. "A pleasure to have met you, your majesty. Have a most magnificent evening if we do not cross paths again." This is followed by a short bow of his head then, less formally, a wave. That's what northern sorts do, right? He lays his hand to his chest as he replies to Irreth, "I have and surely will get people mixed up. Why, I could confuse anybody, especially if I am left to speak uninterrupted for any significant length of time!" As Andreas steps off, Kostas says in his wake, "I too will have to wrangle the tale from you in time, my lord!" He looks to the tray at Irreth's question. "I am not sure that I myself would recommend them all the time, but if you want to go for the unusual, you might sample Hanan liquers. These also provide the unique experience of struggling to see straight for a time after consumption."
Panos
(Panos) "That would be most welcome," Panos accepts Janina's offer readily. "May the evening find you well, and our paths meet again soon," he says to the other adventurer. Though as she takes her leave, he follows Andreas' track through the ballroom--probably not too difficult, and makes his way through the crowd that way as well. The poor cousin might be in for a round of dual annoyances. Or at least a big one with a backup.
Depart
Panos departs.
Depart
Janina departs.
Irreth
(Irreth) Another laugh -- this time approving -- escapes Irreth at Victor suggesting /she/ should host such a gathering. "Well played, Your Majesty," the Sufet says. "As you say, that would be only right." She dips her head toward the departing monarch; casual, in a different way to Kostas, but as if that were her normal, too. "A pleasure to meet you, my lord," she adds to Andreas, before her gaze settles wholly on Kostas. "Well, as my knowledge of the local nobility, nay, my very nation's /reputation/ is on the line, I have every faith you'll rise to the challenge, my lord," she says to Kostas. Yet the wide-eyed, and lip twitching amusement of Irreth makes it clear she's jesting, no real pressure. Except that she's surely going to ask him to make introductions again some time. She doesn't -- yet -- know him well enough to discern whether he's exaggerating or genuinely warning her, on the impact of the Hanan liquors. "I'm /very/ intrigued. But if that should be the outcome, I'd very much like to dance first. So I shall make sure to indulge, before I depart."
Kostas
(Kostas) Kostas gestures grandly. "I have danced after having had a Hanan liquer, Sufet! Now, I should not omit that I danced on the lawn of the university, and at a later time, in an incident that was probably not entirely unrelated, fell over on the road back to the estate. However, it is clear that one can dance after having had such a drink!" Following on, he allows, "One can also dance before such a drink, and I find myself currently short of a person with whom to dance, although I can do an excellent twirl by myself."
Irreth
(Irreth) "Oh. I think Berenice would have my head, if she learned I danced on the lawn of a university." Irreth is /probably/ jesting, given said woman is a commoner and her friend; her eyes are bright with amusement -- likely as not imagining Kostas in such a scenario. "So, perhaps /after/ is the best compromise." And when Kostas points out that not only is he not presently dancing, but does an excellent twirl, Irreth's smile widens. "I'd very much be delighted to see it, if you should like to dance, my lord?" she extends her hand toward him in offer. "Though I warn in advance, I haven't the training in your dances. Dances in Hadash tend to be more performative. Free form. With scarves, too. Lots of scarves."
Kamzu
(Kamzu) Kamzu eats in slow bites and keeps his posture straight while he finishes off his plate of spiced meats. He smooths his cuffs, checks the line of his kaftan, and sets the empty plate on a side table. His eyes move over the doors, as people shuffle in and out. He wipes his hands clean and approaches Irreth. "I don't know that the people here will appreciate our style of dance. But show them what a real dance should be. Their stiff, forced, simple-minded steps do not compare to the beauty of Hadashi passions." He smiles faintly and shifts his gaze to the others and this might where one would add, 'no offense'. He does not.
Kostas
(Kostas) "Not just any lawn, either. No, no. It was the lawn across the road from the Houses of Healing. The staff there are as fine a group of people as one can hope to meet, and, I thought, close students of modern dance. One came out and pointed directly and repeatedly back at the main university building, alternating with placing her hands on her hips, and it was interspersed with vocal contributions." Kostas, done with recounting his experience of dance at the university, then says, "A dance would be excellent, sufet, indeed. The king shall see what he was missing out on!" He smiles a broad smile at Kamzu. "My feet are excellently-minded. I ensure to wash them daily, for one."
Irreth
(Irreth) "At least you were close to help? I'm surprised the students didn't pick you up and carry you away, or at the very least, dance you into their care," Irreth replies, though she's well aware it's likely somewhat exaggerated story; she's clearly leaning into it as she smiles to Kostas and moves toward the dance floor. Irreth's eyes brighten as she spots Kamzu approaching. Her mouth opens to greet her fellow Sufet, but his words seem to catch her off guard, with a flush of color. "I- I'm afraid I don't have nearly enough scarves to do so," she says, and there's a sense of both truth there and reluctance, too. The weighing of her want to show off Hadashi culture, versus her doing a poor job of it is ever the dilemma of a leader. "I'm not nearly so good at it as my sister is. But perhaps when she arrives in the city, I can ask that she put on a demonstration."
Kamzu
(Kamzu) Kamzu gives Kostas a small smile. "No argument there. Your feet are likely very clean, my lord," he says, tone warm. "But where I come from we work hard and get dirty, and washing after is all that more satisfying." He nods once, easy and calm. He turns to Irreth. "Your sister should definitely perform here. Specifically for those that set the culture trends. They can see how far they have yet to go," he agrees. "This city could use a more evolved culture." He adds, gentle and sure, "I hope to help with that soon." He inclines his head as he considers that project."
Kostas
(Kostas) "I am ever carried away," Kostas answers Irreth, tagging along with her. "Sometimes led sedately away, but that in the round seems much less interesting." The continued talk of scarves has him looking curiously from sufet to sufet, eyebrows arched, but it's not enough that he wonders further just now. "My lord, this is the city that turned aside a Greytide. It is the strength of the founders manifest, for hundreds of years now," Kostas says, fervent about this point.
Arrival
Kothar arrives.
Irreth
(Irreth) The tip of her head suggests that at first Irreth is in accord with her fellow Sufet. At least as far as the point of having her sister demonstrate Hadashi culture. Yet what follows makes the dark-haired Anadun straighten. There's no censure, but she does, very pointedly, glance at Kostas, and nod to his firm point. "We should take care not to discount their achievements, Kamzu," she says, quietly, as her eyes return to Kamzu. "For there are many and vast, some of whom I hope to hear more tales of soon. And while they do not understand the likes of which we struggle with in the south -- that is not to say the jewels that are borne out of their culture are any more, or less, worthy than ours."
Kamzu
(Kamzu) Kamzu nods to Kostas, his face serious. "Turning aside a Greytide is a true feat," he says in a calm tone. "Hadashi ways are older, so I speak of years, not worth." He motions lightly to the hall and the guests. "Taste in culture belongs to each person." He turns to Irreth with a small bow of the head. "You are right to caution me," he says, steady and respectful. "I know only of my own culture and little beyond them, so on this I am ignorant and my opinion means very little."
Kostas
(Kostas) "We have roots of a sort, here. The first three realms, that is. All of us had people in Sanctuary, and this is where our ancestors stood. It might be the heart of Valon's Realm of Adana, but it is a site special to many more, too," says Kostas, of Sanctuary. He takes a pause, then, thoughtfully, he suggests to Kamzu, "My lord, I recommend a visit to the great library at Myos. It is a favourite site of mine. It sits in the Great Green, home to some old, old cities. I do not know if they are so old as the oldest in Hadash, but they may be of interest."
Melissa
Melissa offers a curtsy towards Orestes as the song comes to an end and the dancers seem to have concluded their interaction as the Prince gets called away. Of course her cousin, and offical drink watcher, is no where to be seen, nor is the glass, so she goes in search of a new one. Smiles are offered to those who are close enough to the server who is the chosen one to remedy her terrible drinkless fate.
Kothar
(Kothar) A tall, thin, and wizened man enters the Ballroom through a crack in the door, dressed in drab linens. His severe gaze scans the room for a moment, and he mutters to himself before turning back to the door, which he pushes open with a huff.
Kothar
(Kothar) A tall, thin, and wizened man enters the Ballroom through a crack in the door, dressed in drab linens. His severe gaze scans the room for a moment, and he mutters to himself before turning back to the door, which he pushes open with a huff. Through the opened gap walks Kothar Heshbeh, his ringed fingers folded together over his abdomen. He is not a tall man, nor is he particularly handsome; his eyes are dark, set with bags and wrinkles, and his mouth is thin-lipped and perpetually stuck in an almost-frown. There is a gravity to his presence, though, a self-assured sort of confidence to the way he moves. Placing a hand on the small of his back, the valet leans in, whispering something into his ear as he extends a bony finger in the direction of the Hadashi delegation. Kothar nods, once, before setting out across the hall, a slight limp in his gait. Arriving at the gathering of nobility, the Sufet dips his head twice in greeting, first to Irreth, and then Kamzu; the movement is stiff, practiced, stately, and *just* deep enough to convey his respect for their positions. His gaze moves next to Kostas, regarding the man silently for a brief moment, dark eyes unreadable. "Exalteds."
Ada
(Ada) A gentleman still stands by the door, ready to announce new arrivals, whenever they might come in, and his voice booms across the ballroom, "Exalted Sufet Kothar Heshbeh, Ruler of Ancient and Magnificent Pearlsedge and of Heka Nome!"
Irreth
(Irreth) There's a softening in Irreth's expression as she regards Kamzu with a familiar warmth. "In that, we are both similar, and have an excellent opportunity while we're in Sanctuary to learn more." She's quiet, while Kostas teaches them /both/, listening intently even though she doesn't know some of the places of which he speaks -- the library she /does/. "I have heard stories of it. Perhaps a detour, whence we depart for Hadashi?" she suggests to Kamzu. While Hadashi tend to be casual in their address of other nobles, there's always notable exceptions: perhaps because Kothar is older, more storied, Irreth's regard of him has that same warmth but a deep respect, too: "Blessed Kothar. I'm delighted you are here." While they've been waylaid from their trip to the dance floor -- where she notes Melissa returning from -- Irreth seems to take that as an opportunity to return the favor done earlier in the eve: "Might I introduce the Lord Kostas Kournis, whose vast knowledge of the localities has served me well these last two nights. The Exalted Sufet Kothar Heshbeh," she introduces in turn. Unnecessarily, perhaps, owing that announcer. Still.
Kamzu
(Kamzu) Kamzu inclines his head to Kostas. "The library at Myos sounds worthy," he says in a calm voice. "Duty holds me here for now. Trouble from my homeland has pulled me from Hadash for the first time ever. Until those issues are resolved, a trip to Myos will probably have to wait." He glances at Irreth and ticks his head to the side slightly, "At least for me. The needs of each of us might take us each to places we don't yet know." He turns as Kothar approaches and bows from the waist. "Exalted Kothar, welcome," he says, warm and steady. "It is an honor to meet you in Sanctuary." He gestures to a nearby chair. "Will you join us? We were just speaking of troubles and our resolve to see them resolved as quickly as possible."
Kostas
(Kostas) Spotting his cousin, Orestes, departing, Kostas raises a hand aloft in a vigorous parting wave, then as Melissa goes in search of a fresh drink, the Kournis tilts his hand in a gesture that might be an invitation to join the people conversing, or might just be construed as him needing to stretch. When Irreth makes a fresh introduction, Kostas turns and smiles, broadly, and inclines his head. "A delight and a pleasure, Sufet. My knowledge, it must be said, stems from the university, and so is localised indeed as far as it relates to practical experience, and as broad as the world is wide when it comes to reading!" He nods briskly to Kamzu. "I wish you every success in seeing the trouble resolved promptly, Sufet. I could not speak much to the resolution of any troubles. More the domain of a cousin."
Arrival
Theon arrives.
Kothar
(Kothar) Kothar offers Irreth the briefest of smiles, the corners of his dry lips quivering upwards, and his eyes narrowing. "My lady. The blessing is mine. Please pardon my rudeness in arriving so late; I was deep in my letters, I fear. Time gets in the habit of slipping away the older I get." While he puts on an air of fragility, there is an obvious vigor to the man, and a piercing clarity to his gaze. "A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Lord Kournis. You will have to forgive me for butting in to what, I am sure, was a wonderful conversation. I'm afraid I've come to talk *politics*." Another wan smile. The elder Sufet offers Kamzu a pat on the shoulder, and smiles as he accepts the offered seat, pulled out for him by his valet. "Yes, yes. The troubles. At the forefront of all of our minds, I'm sure."
Irreth
(Irreth) The furrow of Irreth's brow as she meets Kamzu's glance suggests -- along with the downward pull of her mouth -- she's well aware of what might require her fellow Sufet's to return to Hadash sooner than later, after the Crowning. And while her own lands are surely beset still, Irreth seems determined to make the most of the time spent traveling here to the heart of the Empire. Dancing, though, might need to wait, sadly. "It is not rude, at least not by any measurable standards. I believe they call it merely fashionably late." Irreth's smile is unihibited in response to Kothar, relaxed -- at least until the elder Sufet clarifies he's come to talk /politics/. A thing she was trying, at least, to avoid tonight. Still, she makes a go of it: "To come to a ball and choose not to dance would be an affront to our hosts, do you not think? Besides, I know you are spry, and light on your feet." She takes a pause, looking around. "Besides, I think those who you /might/ be best off talking said politics with have long since departed -- or partaken of the Hanan liquor." Something, to judge by her glance, /she's/ longing to do later. That or the callback just makes her lips twitch.
Depart
Melissa departs.
Kamzu
(Kamzu) Kamzu nods to Kostas, posture steady. "I thank you for the blessing, my lord," he says in a calm voice. "But do not underestimate yourself. There are many ways a single person can change the world. The fact that you stand in these halls means you are in a place to do it, even in a small way. A single voice can move a hall, and a hall can move a city. If you wish to be in a position to... affect change... I have no doubt that you can." He turns to Irreth with a small shake of his head and a faint smile. "I do not think our hosts will be offended if we do not dance," he says, gentle and sure. "They want the city's most important guests present, and they have them. People are enjoying themselves, and the room is alive. A place like this brings chances for new ties that would not happen elsewhere." He gives Kothar a respectful nod, as if to say politics is exactly what is on the menu. "As I understand it, that is what every interaction is about, even ones not intended as so. In this, I am still learning, but as we represent many people, their fate hangs on our words and actions. Advocating for them should never be far from our minds."
Arrival
Eliza arrives.
Kostas
(Kostas) Kostas actually laughs at Kothar's mention of politics. It's not in any sort of mocking way, just the prospect in its own way amuses him. "Sufet, I have heard some make the argument that all matters are political, but when someone wishes to discuss actual politics, why, unless it is family, I must say that I usually find another matter entirely to occupy my time." He extends this thought in his reply to Kamzu, "I expect I very well do, Sufet, but in the sharing of thoughts, rather than the sharing of knowledge, I find a measure of reserve." Then, with a nod to Irreth, he says, "The ruler of Summer's Abode has the right of it. Although I shall not for even an instant attempt to detain the three of you from a meeting! Have you seen the terrace, here? The restaurant upstairs. It is a good place for one to converse with a measure of privacy without trekking all across the city."
Kothar
(Kothar) "Fashionable, yes. Ever fashionable." Kothar's garb for the night is resplendent; flowing Cornucopian silks, lilac in color, and inlaid with hundreds of small turquoise gems. "It would, of course, be my great honor to dance, dear Irreth. Do you think they know any *proper* music here?" He grins, his lips peeling back to reveal straight teeth, slightly yellowed with age. "Afterwards, of course, we could retire to this terrace. I do so enjoy a nice terrace. And a drink, I should think."
Irreth
(Irreth) It only just occurs to Irreth -- as Kostas makes his thoughts of politics known, and espouses the terrace and the restaurant -- that getting that dance with the Kournis noble is likely indeed off the cards. There's both a flicker of regret and knowing acceptance in her expression, for such is the requirement of leadership. "Perhaps another time...?" it's the kind of thing one says in appeasement, but Irreth does seem to mean it when she smiles at Kostas. She also gives a regretful shake of head when the server comes back around to offer some of that liquor she's been eyeing most of the night. No dancing on lawns for her come morning. "It was more the discussion of politics over the enjoyment of the night I thought they might take exception to," Irreth answers Kamzu, with a little twitch of lips. "Though I guess with so many of the Empire's elite in one place, that, too, is inevitable." That Kothar offers to dance with her surprises Irreth: not that he's willing to dance -- they likely have at events in Pearlsedge before -- but that he's willing to do so here. "The music is certainly has a varied beat than what I'm used to. More... fast paced. Different." Not bad; just something she's likely to have trouble with: she hasn't her sister's far more adept manner for all she's elegant. "But I should be delighted, of course. We do all have much to speak of. It feels like far too long since we were in the same city together."

Ada departs.
Kamzu
(Kamzu) Kamzu gives Kostas a steady nod. "The terrace will serve," he says in a calm tone. "After the dance, we can speak there." He lifts two fingers to his sergeant, and the honor guard eases toward the stair to keep a secure path. He turns to Irreth and Kothar with a faint, warm smile. "Dance, Exalteds. I will see a quiet table set and drinks brought." He steps aside to let them pass, then moves toward the stair with an even pace, eyes on the doors and the gallery as the music rises.
Kostas
(Kostas) Kostas smiles, broadly and readily, at the trio of sufets, and at this point he goes to take his leave. "Another time indeed, Sufet!" he says to Irreth. "I never find that I am short on times, so that is all the better." He doesn't opine further on what they might have to speak of, but turns to Kothar next. "A pleasure to make your acquaintance, sufet, however briefly." Then to all three, he says, "I wish you a productive evening indeed." He ambles off after, heading to mingle some amid the crowd of ball-goers.

Kostas departs.
Kothar
Kothar stands, smoothing a hand over his garment to straighten it as he turns to Kamzu. "We will not keep you waiting long, Exalted." Turning, then, to his wizened valet, Kothar leans in, whispering something into the man's ear. He nods, dutifully, and sets off in the direction of the band. The music stops as the man converses with them, passing over a small pouch, and, after a moment, resumes; the song is familiar, slow, and more at home in the dancehalls of Jewel than here in Sanctuary. Kothar extends a hand to Irreth.
Irreth
(Irreth) Irreth's smile is unmistakably warm -- but then that seems to be her default -- as Kostas kindly says he has time. "I shall hold you to that, then, my lord," she says, as he departs, her eyes tracking him for a moment. It means while she misses the exchange between Kothar and his man, she does note the band's pause and the sudden familiar strains of song, which brightens her eyes. "Ah, it's to be that, is it?" Irreth does not at all sound upset as Kothar takes the time to /persuade/ the local band to play a more familiar song. "I'm impressed they know it well enough to play." And while Irreth does not have any of the scarves one might choose to use for such a dance, her dress -- silken and clinging to her curves -- does suit the slower dance. She accepts Kothar's hand, glances at Kamzu, and dips her head in thanks. There's certainly an easy elegance to her movements, far more at home with the slow dances of Hadashi culture, and for all that she lauded her sister's better skills in the area, she's been to enough formal functions that she's at ease as she yields to Kothar's lead. "I'm glad you're here, Kothar. I think there's much for us all to talk to. And it seems our fellow Sufet is eager to get the Empress' ear." /Now/ who is mixing dancing with politics?
Kothar
(Kothar) All traces of Kothar's limp give way once they are dancing; he moves with smooth deliberation, leading the dance in the traditional style of Pearlsedge, his leather soles click-clacking across the tiled floor. "I suspect we are all quite interested in the Empress' ear. And her pen." A wan smile as he initiates a slow twirl. "I can only hope she will give our situation the attention it so desperately needs." As the music fades away, Kothar releases Irreth's hands, smoothing over his silks once more before turning to the stairway. "Shall we join the Sufet, then?"
Depart
Theon departs.
Kamzu
(Kamzu) Kamzu stands by the terrace rail with hands behind his back. He watches the stair and the ballroom below, eyes calm. He checks the guard at the far door with a small nod. He lifts a cup, takes a slow drink of water, and sets it down. His foot taps the beat when the music changes. He moves to the table and straightens the plates and cups. He folds a spare napkin into a neat square and places it by Irreth's chair. He breaks a small piece of bread and eats it without hurry. He walks the terrace edge once, counting the lamps, then returns to his place. He waits, quiet and ready.
Irreth
(Irreth) Irreth makes a humming noise in response to Kothar's thoughts on having the Empress's ear. "I rather dislike exposing our... foibles to-" she was going to say /outsiders/, because they're not. But still, despite having been part of the Empire for most of her life, Summer's Abode is so far removed from the rest of the Empire it's easier to think of themselves as different than the same. "We should speak of that, before any of us approach her on the matter." The one she doesn't speak of. The one they never speak of. But is becoming increasingly impossible to ignore. Their King. Still, Irreth gives way to the twirl, the longer folds of her twilight blue silken dress flaring in response. Not quite scarves, but it has that same, floating feel, a deliberate choice by her no doubt. A mix of Hadashi and Commonwealth fashion. And once the dance is over, the younger Sufet smiles. "Thank you, Kothar," for the dance? For the words? Hard to say. She touches his arm, moving with her effortless elegance beside him in search of the terrace and their fellow Hadashi native.
